It would be great to see this updated, however, from my own experience I
have to say that keeping a set of links pages up to date is an
exceedingly difficult and time consuming task. What we really need is a
capability for people to enter data into a data base of web sites, with
various keys.

I'm almost thinking that at this point, we need to start putting effort
into developing this data base. Here are some thoughts:

+ Anyone should be able to submit entries
+ Each entry that is submitted includes one or more key words or key
phrases along with a score
+ Each key is dynamically scored:
  - Base score for reliability of submitter
  - Improved score if others have used the same key for the same web
site
  - score given for this key
+ each web site is periodically pinged by the DB, unavailable sites have
a reduced score

Submitters are dynamically scored:
+ if their site keys tend to overlap other submitters
+ admins can give the submitter a rating
+ other submitters can give the submitter a rating

Searches will then return results sorted by score for the key. Searches
can look for exact key match, or fuzzy key match, including complex
searches.

With this idea, I might rate some of the following sites (key scores on
a 1-10 scale)

http://ozbricks.com/portblock/welcome.htm
  pirates (10)
  sailing ships (10)
  seaports (10)
  space ships (7)
  imperials (10)
  minifig world tour (10)

  pirates (10)
  evil stevies pirate game (10)
  sailing ships (5)
  gaming (10)

  pirates (7)
  sailing ships (7)

  pirates (7)
  seaports (10)

The database and scoring system idea you propose sounds like the best way to go.
Like you said, just going through the task of checking every site would be a
pain.

I'd imagine this would be something that would take some time to get in full
working order but to see this would be a great addition to our community.
