It's our belief that many people have drifted away from RTL over the years
as it shifted slowly away from good old-fashioned building discussions
(1993-94) into a more commercial/marketplace/auctions type of atmosphere
(1995-98).

We'd like to see an alternative area on the net that people can call home,
and where they can have the opportunity to return to smaller focus groups
but still be able to wander out into the greater community for a fresh
change of scenery.  I love RTL, but I think it's outgrown itself.

I can see the organizational benefit, but I also like
the "one big mess" aspect of browsing r.t.l.

Just asking...

One thing we noticed in the alpha-testing of the newsserver was a very
large output per person per unit of time compared to RTL.  (And it wasn't
just because MikeS and LarryP were there. :-)  I think this is in part
because of the instantaneous turnaround time in posting (no waiting for
propagation across Usenet) and as Sarah Heacock pointed out, it felt like
there was more room to stretch one's wings when there were half a dozen
people compared to hundreds or thousands.  It felt closer -- and less like
any given message would be ignored by a zillion people -- so it felt
friendlier in a weird sort of way.

I believe the local city/country groups will also help nurture and restore
the feeling of a closer community, this time a fractal community, and I
also suspect there are many more people per locality than is commonly
believed.

Time will tell if this is a good idea or not, and whether people accept it
or not.  It's not really designed as a replacement for RTL, but rather to
augment it or to provide an alternate haven for those who feel RTL is too
hostile or impure (i.e., non-building-oriented).

This is exactly why I like this better. I will tend to not even join discussions if I have to wade through so many posts to read the responses. Thanks, again, Todd. -- A A ( o o ) Carolyn (URL) ~ < Todd Lehman wrote in message (...) (26 years ago, 30-Sep-98, to lugnet.admin.general)
