Or, has such a re-release ever happened before?

Well, the Shell sets showing up in the US this year are listed as 1998, 2000
and would count as a re-release.

I guess it all depends on how you define a discontinued set, and even what
constitutes a re-release (and does a set have to be discontinued to be
re-released?).  If we define a set with more than one copyright date as a
re-release, then there have been quite a few that I've seen, mostly Duplo,
train track in particular (but not exclusively).  I've also recently seen a
Basic System bucket with c1998 c2000 (I'm not at home with my collection db
so I can't give specific set refs here.)

I think I have Duplo train track boxes with 3 copyright dates (I'll have to
double check this) and as far as I am aware the track was never discontinued
as such.  Likewise I wouldn't say that the 2699 Duplo Farm was discontinued,
although it hasn't necessarily been available everywhere the entire time (I
can see that to some/most? people that "discontinued" and "not available
here" probably amount to the same thing though!)

A couple of years ago all the Duplo sets had the packaging redesigned, at
the time there were sets with both box designs on the shelves at the same
time.  I'm not sure but I think that at least some of these got new
copyright dates along with it.  The only Duplo sets I've bought multiples of
over time are train sets, so these would be the only ones I could verify
now.  It is possible that a packaging redesign leads to a renewed copyright
date, or it could be some other factor.

The other set numbers that Christian mentioned are most likely new (do tell
us more!) although last time I looked many of my mid-90s Duplo sets were not
listed on Lugnet so the non-listing here isn't a definitive answer.  The
3xxx numbers would seem to indicate new sets as Duplo sets have generally
been 2xxx in the past.

As it is, there are still 2000 release sets that aren't available where I
live (that should be), so I probably shouldn't be getting too excited about
2001 sets for another year or so yet! :)

Town sets from 1978 got new dates when their packaging was changed. They weren't discontinued, just refreshed. (24 years ago, 14-Dec-00, to lugnet.admin.database, lugnet.general, lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.duplo)
