Hi all,
although we shouldn't be optimistic becuase the small fact I found out
today, I still can't wait to tell you about it! Today, I *might* have found
the very first re-released discontinued set ever. It's nothing important
IMHO as it's been only a Duplo set, but still it's a 1996 released set
re-relased in 2001!
Well, here's the entire story...
While being on the chase for 2001 sets and (mostly unsuccesfully) checking
several local toy stores in my area (Germany), I thought I'd also take a
look on the Duplo shelves as they sometimes carry new items before the
actual 'system' shelves do so. I don't recall all Duplo sets off my head so
I have to take them out of the shelves and take a look at the bottom where
the year next to the copyright indicates the year the set has been released.
None of the sets I picked up was a 2001 one until I suddenly fell over a
strange box. A new design (as far as I am aware of Duplo boxes) made me
believe that this one could be one of the next year sets. Then, I took a
close look at the picture and thought: Ah, no - this is set 2699, an old
Duplo farm, it must be a rather old set that hasn't been sold for years.
That would explain why the box design was different from all the other sets
in the Duplo section. Hm, but then again the box looked too new for being
several years old. I grabbed it out of the shelf to look at the bottom of
the box - and - what did I see?
"© 1996, 2001 The LEGO Company" !
I was *very* confused about that fact so I carefully looked at the rest of
the box. On the left side, I found pictures of five other LEGO Duplo sets.
It must be new that LEGO now even puts Advertisements right on the sets,
correct (okay, train track packs excluded) ? I wrote down all the set
numbers of the other sets as I wasn't sure if these were 2001 releases or
not. They all had the new box design (as far as I was able to make out the
smalle images) and I didn't remember having seen them before. Now, back at
home I found out that none of them is listed on Lugnet yet: #2971, #3083,
#3088, #3089, #3093 so it is pretty obvious that these will be 2001 sets as
well.
Let's hope that this set is only the first re-released LEGO set and that
more will appear within 2001. Of course, 1996 is not too far away, but still
TLC could win a lot of money by re-releasing discontinued stuff like - well
let's say the famous Technic set #8480 from 1996 (as the original Duplo farm
2699 was released that year too). The Shuttle could include all the elements
as in 1996 but packaged inside a new designed box. Wouldn't that be cool? I
know I am too optimistic, but if TLC can come up with *one* discontinued
LEGO set it shouldn't be too difficult to expand this idea for other items,
right? Let's hope!!
Or, has such a re-release ever happened before?
Bye, Christian --- xTI@N.
