FWIW I haven't tried this yet myself, but its very typical to use light sensors for this sort of thing in HO scale model railroading. There are a lot of advantages to "contactless" detection. On the down side, you need to minimize interference from (...) (25 years ago, 29-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.trains)

No significant difference. The Dacta sensors (light and rotation) originally had longer, thinner wires and a blue connector on the end (instead of the black connector). In all other aspects they were identical. I wouldn't be surprised if at some (...) (25 years ago, 29-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Mike, you can find a good selection of tackle boxes and hardware boxes at any large general store, like KMart, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. In my area Wal-Mart had the best selection.
