Following the long and rambling thread on the doublestack car one thing that
came up (1) that inspired me was the
idea of a famous trains series.
Purely for the sake of entertainment Im looking for people to suggest ideas
for hypothetical sets. Im suggesting two categories
A standalone loco set to be followed later by a maximum of TWO suitable
rolling stock sets (these can be build-able as different variations as per
the Santa Fe coaches).
A complete train set consisting of no more than FOUR vehicles.
As we are speaking hypothetically you can assume that Lego produce a wheel
suitable for steam locomotives (2) along the lines of the
BBB wheels. Although you are not being asked
to actually design the sets you should assume that they would be 6 wide to
the standard Lego style so that may influence your decision. As well as
suggesting your favourites try to think of things that would make good sets
with widespread appeal. What famous trains from other countries do you know
of? Links to images of the real thing would be good too.
Once people have made their suggestions Ill make a couple of polls.

(1) Well actually, I said it!
(2) Or old skool electrics

Well, It just has to be the Mallard. World famous, fast, impressive streamilned
shape and well-represented with standard Lego colours.
Will need BBB wheels but could get away without the rods as the skirts cover a
large proportion of the drivers. Put the motor in the 8-wheel corridor tender,
add the crew and there you have a little piece of rail history in Lego.
This would be my choice for the loco. To go with it, a wonderful white-rooved
teak-panelled luxury LNER dining coach using the 6x1 timber printed tiles
and....a working dynomometer car. The Dyno car was used as part of the seven
coach set when the Mallard broke the world speed record in 1938. You could use a
track-driven rotational output to operate recording equipment inside the car
which would be complete with boffins and geeks studying the graphs and dials.
As for a cute set, once again I draw inspiration from Europe and keeping in mind
the need to keep the set affordable, would suggest a Dockside set for play
value. Loco would be any reasonably prototypical 0-4-0 diesel shunter,
preferably British of course! Wagons would be short wheelbase, say a fish van, a
flat wagon and a Lowmac (dropped centre wagon for high loads) all with with
loads. The set would also include a freight platform and unloading crane with
siding and small boat capable of being loaded from the trackside crane.
This set might sound familar, as if done before by Lego but the difference this
time is that the loco, wagons and boat would be based on prototypes so its
appeal would be broadened. By keeping to the industrial dock theme, you can get
way with a foreign loco more convincingly. All do-able with current bricks and
colours.
