I am having the hardest time coming up with a gearbox that allows a 90 degree

one, the gears skip, or simply snap.  Does anybody have a small, simple, home
made version that can tolerate a lot of torque?  Even the lego one, offered in
the old Off roader (blue not motorized, set) cracks the gears.  Help!
Thanks

The case/holder that breaks the gears is this one.

My project is to try to make A Deere 318, using the power functions medium
motor.  I have a 9x gear reduction after the motor, before my home made case,
which allows the bevel gears to 'jump.'  The case has to go from a north/south
arrangement to east/west, without skipping gears, but rather stalling the motor.
I have gone through too many gears.

The piece on the front of the model is dozer blade.  This tractor has to push a
fair amount of weight over a carpet, and pull weight, not to mention the battery
box and motors.  If i can, i want to stay away from the 24 tooth crown gear and
a worm gear.

I have faced this problem many times, and used the lego made one (Link above)
but have never been happy with it.

Here is a brickshelf gallery of pictures.

Thank you,
