I was wondering if there were any good sites on-line with plans for merchant brigs. I was thinking about trying to build one between now and the cruise

I don’t know of any. I’d suggest working from pictures instead, I used pictures of the HMBrig Supply when I build the HMLBrig Demand. Given that you have to end up straightening out a lot of the curves anyway, I’m not sure that having plans on hand would make things that much easier. Although, of course, everything might be labelled.

OK, that makes sense. I’ll probably spend a lot of time looking at the Supply and Demand when I’m building.

Looking at the definition of a brig, am I right in saying that the BSB and RBR are brigs? If so, that’s helpful as I was going to start with my second BSB as my base and work from there...

Yes, I think a brig can work well with two (RBR) or three (BSB) centre sections, although, to keep things in proportion to the rest of my fleet, all the brigs I’ve built (other than an intact BSB) have been two centre section vessels (the original Eponine and the current Madame Thenadier, Demand and Allsort).

In fact the brig Allsort is just a BSB with one centre section removed. Fuzzy pics are here, but I hope to have some better pics of the Allsort this weekend.

and I’d also like to get a better idea of the name of the sails and such before I go aboard. I’ve been reading the trinity of Age of Sail nautical fiction (Forrester, O’Brian, and Kent) but the names of the rigging and sails has not really stuck in my head well. Thanks for any help you can give me!

There’s an informative page here which has a nice sail plan of a four masted barque. Just make allowances for the absence of the two aft masts...

That’s exactly what I was looking for as far as the naming of things, thanks!

Always happy to help a shipwright!

Cheers
