Lego Enthusiasts Are Building Connections Online, Brick by Brick

Lego enthusiasts say you can build almost anything with the beloved
plastic bricks. And one Boston couple has proved just that over the last
four years--they've built a worldwide community.
With their Web site, at http://www.lugnet.com (an abbreviation of Lego
Users Group Network), Todd Lehman and Suzanne Rich have created the
Internet's home base for Lego enthusiasts around the globe. The site
features Lego news, chat rooms, links to aficionados' personal sites, photos
of members' creations and even inventories of Lego pieces, listing all the
various sets in which each is available.
"We figured somebody would inevitably do this. All these people are
smart people and incredibly dedicated," said Rich, 30. "It was pretty
obvious the amount of enthusiasm people have."
About 1,000 people visit the site every couple of days. About 600 from
around the world have registered as members, and tens of thousands more are
regular visitors, Rich said.
"It's great. It's satisfying. This is really what we hoped it would be,"
said Rich, who used to work for Lego as a freelancer making conceptual
drawings in the company's Boston office. But the site isn't affiliated with
the company--it is strictly by and for devotees of the bricks.
"We sort of like being unofficial. It makes the fans more comfortable.
They can say what they want," Rich said. "It's sort of like the underground.
"A common thread is people tend to be interested in technical things
and creative things," such as engineers or graphic designers who use
computers. For example, Lehman, 33, is a computer programmer who now works
at Boston University.
The site announces its broad appeal: "You are not alone! LUGNET is home
to thousands of Lego fans of all ages. We are a community which never
sleeps--and has been called 'the friendliest place on the Internet.' "
"It's really encouraging to see people out there doing the same thing,"
Rich said. "It's like having a peer group. If I was only building Lego in
isolation, I don't think I would be doing it with the same kind of passion."
The appeal stems from the simplicity of the pieces and the complexity
and variety of things that they can be used to create. Far advanced from the
static square blocks and flat panels of decades ago, Lego now features
programmable bricks that can be plugged into computers, and one set includes
a digital video camera, Rich said.
"It's a beautiful system. It's intricate," she said of Lego. "In those
ways it's not really a toy, it's a medium. It can be pretty addictive."
Lehman coded the LUGNET site in HTML himself, and Rich said she spends
an average of 20 hours a week answering e-mail and adding content.
"We talked about making a site that would bring everybody's individual
Lego sites together, and we could pool information," Rich said. "We really
wanted it to be a network of user groups, so there are smaller communities
within the community."
Those communities range from the Dutch user group (De Bouwsteen, which
translates as "the Building Brick") to the Dixie user group (based in
Georgia, its home page features the group's mascot, Bubba, a Lego figure in
overalls exclaiming, "Hi, y'all"), and many more around the globe.
The site also features a massive ongoing project--a database of the
thousands of types of Lego sets the company has ever sold.
"We get information from people all over the world. It's really a
community project. And I've heard that people at the company, at Lego, do
use it because I don't think they have anything like that," Rich said.
In addition, LUGNET links to a site of the week. "We never thought
there would be another Lego site each week that would be worth highlighting,
but there's been no shortage," Rich said. "It's amazing."

Van zaterdag 20 oktober tot dinsdag 23 oktober zal er in de IJsselhallen
in Zwolle, Nederland, een grote LEGO manifestatie worden gehouden. Naast
LEGO, De IJsselhallen en Foxkids is ook de Nederlandse club van LEGO Bouwers en
Verzamelaars De Bouwsteen betrokken bij de organistatie van dit
evenement. Op een oppervlakte van 7000 vierkante meter zal van alles op
het gebied van LEGO te zien en te doen zijn. Zo zullen er speciale
nieuwe en oude sets te koop zijn, er zal een grote tentoonstelling van
oude en nieuwe sets te zien zijn, veel eigen creaties, bouwwedstrijden
en een recordpoging. Daarnaast zijn wij druk bezig om nog veel meer
activiteiten aan deze lijst toe te voegen. Al met al wordt het een
evenement waarbij de echte LEGO liefhebber zeker aanwezig moet zijn.
Graag zien we dan ook een ieder van jullie bij dit grote evenement.

Hoi LEGO liefhebbers,
Barry Lamers heeft gelijk er staat to 18 februari een 5,25 m
grote Silver Champion op de auto Rai te Amsterdam. Niet
geheel uit LEGO opgebouwd maar toch wel mooi. De slangen of
uitlaten zijn niet van LEGO stenen net als de banden maar de
rest is blokje voor blokje opgebouwd.

Bouwtijd 2.174 uur
Kortom een aardig model tussen al het andere staal geweld.
Om er alleen voor dat model naar toe te gaan en de 25 gulden
toegang te betalen voert naar mijn gevoel wel wat ver.
Dan zwijg ik maar over al die andere auto enthousiasten die
over de beursvloer lopen en
naar al dat moois dat je in bijna alle gevallen mag proberen
komen kijken. Op zich best
gezellig maar je kunt er niet tegelijk lopen en kijken, maar
de meeste mensen doen dat
toch. Het leterlijke en figuurlijke hoogte punt is de
hindernis baan buiten. Je kunt je daar in de rij staande
vergapen aan deze Pretpark achtige achtbaan. Want in de rij
moet je staan om in een van de op het terrein rondrijdende
terrein autos te mogen plaatsnemen. In het midden staat een
brug met een helling van bijna 45 graden op en weer neer
waar de auto onder en overheen rijden. Het evenement is
dermate groot dat het de gehele Rai, alle hallen en ruimten
zijn gevuld met autos en accesoires.
Maar het licht puntje dat er zonder verdere aandacht, geen
begeleiding, geen folders,
staat is als je er als LEGO liefhebber rondloopt een die je
niet moet missen. De
LEGOstand wordt niet op de legenda vermeld, staat niet in de
alfabetischegids, terwijl
ook bijna niemand weet waar of zelfs of die er wel staat.
Maar ondanks dat weten veel
mensen toch dat ie er is, de meeste wijzen naar de stands
van LOTUS of daar in de
buurt. Maar het is nummer 1006, een doorgang tussen hal 1 en
3, tussen de Suzuki en de
Hyundai stands.

Leuk ! Dat heeft vast iets te maken met de prominente plaats die wij op de
"historische" lijst van gebruikersclubs innemen, dankzij de vroege
stichtingsdatum van "De Bouwsteen". Wij zijn de oudste lokale legoclub ter
wereld die nog onder dezelfde naam opereert (Ik heb de datum nog persoonlijk
doorgegeven toen Todd Lehman er de oproep voor plaatste). De verslaggever
van de LA Times heeft "De Bouwsteen" zelfs correct naar het engels vertaalt,
misschien dat hij toch een beetje persoonlijke interesse naar Nederland heeft.
Nice ! Probably the prominent place we own on the "LUG & LTC dates of
formation" list has something to do with this. We are the oldest Local Users
Group on the world that is still operating under the same name (I personaly
took care of providing the date to Todd Lehman when he placed te call to
send him this information) The reporter of the LA Times even translated our
name "De Bouwsteen" correctly into English, maybe he does take some personal
interest in our country.
