   Hey all,

I just followed a link from the new ILENN - International LEGO Enthusiasts News Network to this article about the funeral services for a soldier killed in Iraq. This was linked on ILENN because in remembering his son, the father noted: “He used to be a real Lego-maniac,” he said. “And we have all his Legos from when he was a kid.”

What a touching and personal moment, and how sad. LEGO as a symbol of childhood (and, by extension, of innocence) becomes all the more poignant when discussed in context of war. Regardless of one’s views on the war in Iraq, the loss of a family member in such a violent fashion is a trauma that, thankfully, few of us ever have to bear. But all of us here, even the clone-fans, share a small bond with the son that this family has lost.

Anyway, right after that statement, there are a few paragraphs about a protest by the “Reverend” Fred Phelps’ group. You know, these are the jerks that show up any time someone gay dies and hold up the “God hates homos” (or worse) signs. Apparently they have somehow decided that problems in Iraq are a punishment on America for homosexuals or something.

You know, I too believe that everything happens for a reason, that everything is an element of God’s plan. But, I cannot even by the furthest stretch of the imagination see how they came up with that. I guess when a person is filled with hate, any ol’ avenue for releasing that hate will do.

   Phelps is a hateful monster.

Anyway, I’m generally on the conservative side of the political aisle and I’m a religious person, and I am uncomfortable with some of the actions of some gay-rights organizations, so I suppose some people might expect me to support this type of jerk. But those of us who are conservative and Christian really need to stand up and denounce these people. If God hates anyone, it really must be those who take His name and paste it onto their own hate-filled causes.

I too am a conservative (or, you can label me as such) both politically and religiously and I vote and whatever else accordingly, but again, I do not associate myself with people like this. My opinion is that they have become fanatical in the wrong way. Being a Christian fanatic is a good thing if you follow Jesus’ example and be a fanatic of love -- you cannot embrace or bring anyone to the Lord with hatred in your heart, only love.

There’s a bumper sticker along the lines of “Lord, protect me from your followers.” Clearly, Phelps is one of the followers whom that sticker was intended to describe.

Heh, funny.

Anyway, I rarely peek into the off-topic.debate forum, but this just really irked me this morning.

If I might intercede, do not make the same mistake Phelps and others make, do not follow down the same path. Do not hold any anger in your heart against him. He and his followers are like a destructive storm that we must weather. It is bad, yes, but holding anger in your heart against him in a way makes you just like him. His time will pass and with him his hate. But, if their is hate left behind in his wake, then he has succeeded. If we fill in his wake with love, then he will have failed and will be remembered no more.

And rightly so. Thanks for sharing this article. I usually follow the exploits of Phelps’ hate-crusade, but this particular one had escaped my notice.

Dave!
