There was an interesting discussion in RTL on the import duties for
construction toys which pointed to the  U.S. International Trade
Commission -- 1999 Tariff Database at
http://205.197.120.17/scripts/tariff.asp (you can get to it from
http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/impoexpo/impoexpo.htm by clicking on the
1st item "Informal Entries (under US $2,000) & Importing Goods for
Personal Use" and then "Duty Rates" then "U.S. International Trade
Commission - Tariff Database ").

From there search for "construction". Go to to the bottom of the list
and select the button beside "95033000.--Construction sets and
constructional toys (o/than scale model kits) nesoi and
parts and accessories thereof--8/1/97" and then go back to the top and
hit the "Detail" button.

From that page you can get to a page on imports by source country. Here
is some of the data from that page (massaged to fit without wrapping and
to eliminate some of the less interesting countries):

A few questions of interest:

- What percentage of Denmark's imports are Lego?
- Why have Denmark's imports nearly doubled for this year so far?
- What construction toy(s) come from Switzerland and Canada?
- Why have Canada's imports dropped?
- What's up with France?
- What are the 1 year shooting star products from Finland and Australia?

Cool stuff, thanks for the post. (...) MegaBlocks, right? Isn't Ritvik HQed in Quebec? (...) People don't like MegaBlocks as much as they used to? (...) Now THAT is a question that begs a more general answer than just from the Toy perspective... :-) (...) (25 years ago, 31-Aug-99, to lugnet.market.theory, lugnet.off-topic.fun, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) Star Wars maybe? I expect that LEGO sales in the US will be way up this year due to the Star Wars sets, which are not only very good LEGO sets, but also very good Star Wars toys. ---...--- Tim Buchheim tim@cs.hmc.edu HMC Computer Science (...)
