OK,
Now that I'm back, I thought I would open up a hornets nest.....
After checking about 2 dozen old Samsonite Lego sets from 1961-70 and several
dozen European Lego sets from the same era, I have come to the conclusion that
the quality of a lot (NOT ALL) of what was sold in the USA at the time was of
MUCH poorer quality than the Lego that was sold in Europe. In fact European
Lego bricks were practically flawless at the time (and still are). But much of
what was sold in the USA was of poorer quality. Some examples are poor mold
cleaning (the mold release agent or MRA was not cleaned properly) which caused a
lot of blemishes on the Lego bricks, overstamped punches on the Lego logos on
the studs (more than one font used on the same bricks, some studs have rotated
fonts - 90, 180, and 270 degree rotations). And some pieces (especially yellow)
were produced in Cellulose Acetate (eliminated in Europe in 1963) until 1970.
Also the old waffle bottom white plates produced in Europe until 1963 were still
around in USA Samsonite sets as late as 1970 (often mixed in with the circle
bottom plates that were supposed to replace them).
And the list goes on.....
The question all this begs is this, does this represent a poor level of
productivity and maintenance on the part of USA Samsonite, or does it represent
the fact that perhaps Lego Europe sent their "factory seconds" Lego molds to USA
Samsonite? Or is it a combination of the two.
Hmmmmmm
