To All coming from O'Hare,

For those coming into Chicago through O'Hare International Airport:

I too was wondering how I was getting from the airport to the Hotel in Wheeling.
I was able to use the Internet to find that I could go cheaply, less than $5 by
train and then cab fair 2.3 miles, using the METRA rail service. Follow the
details below and you will be whisked away in about 30 minutes from O'Hare to
the hotel.

First, arrive at O'Hare International Airport. You will want to go to the O'Hare
Transfer station on the Metra North Central Service Line. See the details here:

http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ncs.shtml

http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ohare.shtml

Now to get there from the airport you are looking for a shuttle. I called Metra
and the guy wasn't certain if it was a bus or a van or even if it had a Metra
logo on it. Researching the O'Hare Airport web site I found that you might just
take one of the parking shuttles to lot F which is just off the street next to
the O'Hare Transfer Station. See the parking map here:

http://www.flychicago.com/ohare/parkingohare/pdf/ORDLots.pdf

or here:

http://www.flychicago.com/ohare/parkingohare/pdf/OrdLotfOpen.pdf

Lot F is in the upper right corner of the map on Zemke Road. At the end of Zemke
Rd, to the right, is the O'Hare Transfer Station.

You will have to wait for the train. Check the outbound schedule here to know
when to catch the train:

http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ncs_wkout.shtml

I will be arriving on Delta at about 12:30 and hope to make it to the transfer
station to catch the #105 train outbound to Wheeling at 1:32. If not there is
another at 3:32.

The #105 train arrives in Wheeling in just 15 mintues so the trip is quick with
only one stop, Prospect Heights, in between. Check out the Wheeling Station
here:

http://metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/wheeling.shtml

Looks like a nicve station. Now search Google Maps, I found that the distance is
only 2.3 miles from the station in Wheeling to the hotel. Use the information
below to check for yourself.

http://maps.google.com/

Use these addresses:

400 Town Street Wheeling IL 60090

601 N. Milwaukee Ave. Wheeling, IL 60090

Now I could walk it, but I think I will hail a cab. The cost will definitely be
in the $5 to $10 range. For the Train, it looks like the fair will be either
$3.05 or $3.45 (two different spots on the web site had two different values).

That seems a lot less expensive overall than a cab that will go 15.2 miles from
the airport to the hotel. It seems like that expense would be more in the $30
range. A ride from the airport to downtown is projected to be $35 to $40 and
downtown is closer than Wheeling.

Here's a link to a published cost analysis by CityofChicago.org:

http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalContentItemAction.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@1776393956.1182258900@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdaddlelgmflgcefecelldffhdfgn.0&contentOID=536913260&contenTypeName=COC_EDITORIAL&topChannelName=Residents&blockName=Promo+Item&channelId=-536879023&programId=536879088

Nasty link, I know, but it gets you to the heart of the information. If it
doesn't work search from the home page for Cabs and follow the Livery/Taxi link.

The page is careful to mention that "Rates from O'Hare or Midway to all other
suburbs are meter and one-half." I assume that means that a 15.2 mile ride from
O'Hare to Wheeling would be the meter cost plus 1/2 the meter cost.

So, let's see... If the initial meter pull is $2.25 and each additonal 1/9 of a
mile is $0.20 then the distance alone will cost be $29.41. But that's just the
mileage. You are going to pay $0.20 for every 36 seconds of travel. So assuming
the trip averages 30 miles per hour from airport to hotel over the 15.2 mile
course, then your travel time will be approximately 30 minutes. That's not
counting traffic snarles that turn expressways into parking lots. So every 36
seconds of 1800 seconds costs $0.20. That would be about $10 in addition to the
mileage. So add $10 to $30 you get $40 and then add another half, so it looks
like a trip from O'Hare to the hotel by cab would be $60.

But wait there's more. You get to pay a fuel surcharge. I wonder if that is just
tacked on at the end or considered before the half increase?

Nope, the train makes more sense to me. The cab from the train station to the
hotel should only cost about $9.00 considering the same costs; 2.25 for the flag
pull, $0.20 per 1/9 mile, and $0.20 for every 36 seconds spent in the cab.

Hope this helps those going from O'Hare to Wheeling.

Todd
