Okay, de-lurking to give you, My Deep Thoughts:

The idea to collaborate is very interesting but very difficult to pull off
successfully without some fantastic artistic chemistry.  Most artist-types
seem to have pretty healthy egos so I suspect the list of those willing to
give up major autonomy for the sake of a collaborative project would be on
the short side.  Then aside from ideological compatibility, there is the
practical issue of coordinating.  I don't think it's impossible but it
certainly seems harder than a solo project.  On the positive side, as you
said, you can double/triple/quadruple/etc. your available resources (bricks,
research, and ideas).  I am not a CW member but the crossover potential
seems to me the biggest but most appealing challenge.

My experience: I've written a collaborative paper for a graduate seminar and
while parts of it were brilliant (my parts, haha--no, just kidding, though I
am a genius--no, just kidding--did I mention healthy egos?), it was very
uneven and you could kind of tell who wrote what.  Though we only wrote an
end total of 15 pages apiece rather than the 30 of individual writers, I
think we put in twice as much work individually just to get the paper
presentable, both of us arguing over form as well as content.  I am pretty
sure that if we had done separate papers, both would have been better
written than our 1 joint paper, but then the painful experience of deleting
one of your brilliant ideas because your writing partner just HAD to get one
of hers in instead would never have happened.  At the time, it was very
frustrating, but in the long run the experience made me a better writer, as
Shiri pointed out crossovers can do.

There are of course less invasive methods of collaboration, such as creative
teams like in comic books.  In fact, that is kind of how I imagine CW might
work best, kind of like a "Marvel Universe" or "DC Universe" where
crossovers between "books" could occur on occasion, though the individual
balladeers would control their own book for the most part.  Just don't try
to Secret Wars it and you can avoid any major disaster for both reader and
writer.  Then again, I am not a CW member so it is easy for me to sit back
and comment since I don't have anything invested in CW.  I am training to
become a professional critic, however, since critics are in high demand in
all sectors of society, especially the arts.  Anyhoo, I think there has been
a lot already written about CW regarding the creative control issue so
perhaps some research in the Lugnet message archive would be helpful.

I'll start from the end to the beginning, if you don't mind... (...) In one word; yes. In more words: CW was created for a few reasons. IIRC, it happened during and after Pawel was on a major story-and-building roll. His storyline, which wasn't a (...) (24 years ago, 22-Jul-00, to lugnet.castle)
