Hi all,

After sounding out opinion I’ve decided to run this as both a challenge and a competition. My reason for this is that I don’t want to discourage people from submitting models which they fear won’t win but I also realise that for some people competition spurs creativity.

In order to best accomodate this I would like people who wish an image to compete to clearly mark it “Remix Lenin Competition Entry” and post it to the lugnet.cad.ray newsgroup. Likewise please mark non-competition entries as “Remix Lenin Challenge Entry”. If you cannot post to Lugnet for some reason, email your entry to me at tgould(.DOT)lego(@AT)gmail(.DOT)com and I will submit it for you.

Judgement will be on overall quality of the image. This will include rendering quality, postproduction quality and aesthetic quality. Judges will be announced at the close of the competition. No prize will be awarded although I may make a virtual award to suit the virtual nature of the competition.

The Model

If you haven’t guessed it by now, the model has something to do with Lenin. In fact, it is a statue of him. I decided on this partially because I use it myself as a test for rendering techniques and because it has no distinct theme and thus doesn’t bias the challenge towards people used to rendering certain types of models.

*** LDR file ***

Duration

This challenge will run until Monday the 6th of March. All entries to the competition must be in before 6pm GMT on that day. Challenge entries can be submitted whenever you like but I will only collate those submitted before that date.

The Rules
  • Everyone is encouraged to join in. Even if you’ve never rendered before this might be a good chance to start and to learn something.

  • You can join at any time before the 6th of March by submitting an entry to the lugnet.cad.ray newsgroup and marking it with the correct title.

  • Multiple entries are allowed in the challenge. Enter as many times as you wish. The competition is restricted to one entry per person.

  • Original model must be kept intact and in its original colours. However props of any form may be used so long as the original model features obviously and prominently.

  • Any postproduction is allowed using whatever techniques and software you choose.

  • POVray or MegaPOV rendering is preferred as it allows the greatest number of people to learn.

  • All techniques and settings should be described as clearly as possible. This includes render settings and postproduction. If other people can reproduce your work then you have done well.

  • It is requested that you post a POVray file (or multiple files) containing as much information as possible to allow others to render your model. I understand that this may be difficult for those with multiple includes but please try. LGEO and lugnet_colors.inc (and the individual colour files) do not need to be included. Please add your name in a comment at the top of all files you include.

  • Competition entries must include the source file(s) within reasonable limits.

  • It is quite acceptable to use techniques mentioned in earlier entries however this should be credited. Verbatim copying of POV files is discouraged.
Other information

I will be adding all submitted images (possibly rescaled if they are too large) and source files (where possible) to a folder in my BS gallery (here). I will attempt to identify them by the initals of the author and a number.

Make Lenin proud with a good remixing!!!!

Tim Gould’s example entry to the remix Lenin challenge. Feel free to use this as a guideline for your own entries.

POV source

Techniques used: Radiosity from rad_def.inc (radiosity_OutdoorLQ), Colours from lugnet_colors.inc (called from “legocols.inc”), single area light, giant surrounding sphere to simulate curved floor.

When I first uploaded the ldraw file it included two green 8x16 baseplates. I have removed these and uploaded the new version. If you got this model before I removed the baseplates then please feel free to remove them.

I get "File 3680C01.dat not found" when I try to load the model in MLCad.
Any idea what update I may have missed?

(I have 0205, 0206, 0301, 0302, 0303, 0401, 0402, 0403, 0404, 0501)

That part is a shortcut to a complete turntable. According to the part it was in the 2002-06 update so you should have it.

Here is the part if anyone else has problems.

I recommend you update your library by downloading the Complete Updates Rollup file.   Since you missed 0206 you never know what else you may have missed or inadvertantly deleted.

I have been made aware that perhaps making this rule a little but more flexible could add to the creativity. As such, please read the following altered version.
  • Original model must be kept mostly intact and in its original colours. Some rearrangement is allowable provided so long as all the components are clear and present (moving the minifig or ‘breaking’ the statue would be allowed, using the pieces to make something else would not). If I feel a competition entry is too altered I will publically let the creator know.

  • Props of any form may be used so long as the original model features obviously and prominently.

Sorry about the change but it should make it more fun.

Thanks! I extracted all my .zip files again, from 0205 to 0501 and now all
the parts are there (should have thought about that myself...) Time to start
POVRay...

I totaly *love* this idea of challenge annex competition! It’s been a while since I last rendered a scene and have to regain my skills. I have some idea on what I want to create, but it will be hard to do. All entries so far are absolutely beautiful and amazing. This will become a very educational adventure. Thank you Timothy!

Thanks Jan. You’ve summed up pretty much why I wanted to make it: for education. It’s a great way to learn what other people use and to encourage yourself to find out new tricks which you can then share.

Looking at my challenge entry, I realize that no one will learn anything from it... I’m pleased with the results, but it feels like a bit of a failure, because I can’t give a good lesson on how the look was achieved. I tend to get very carried away in Photoshop, to the point where I’ve made so many dozens of modifications I can’t fully retrace my steps. I’d like to make another entry from a more educational perspective. I’ll try to use only free software, so as to make it fully accessible to anyone.

By the way, I think the guy who used the snow macro made a great example of how we shouldn’t forget to use POV-Ray’s amazing scene description language to do unconventional things.

I don’t think you need to write a “how to do this” tutorial. Nowadays, with google and the online tutorials, it can be a big help just giving the names of some of the tools you use. Often fining out how to do something is easy once you know the name but really hard until then.
