   However, if there could be a standard for texture mapping patterns & stickers (and parts made by mixing multiple colors of plastic), that would solve this dilemma -- simple patterns could be modeled with color codes, and advanced patterns could be modeled with texture maps. But I’m just dreaming there...

So, to expand a little on my earlier comments -- I think it would be reasonable, for now, to allow dithered colors1 in pattern/sticker parts and disallow RGB codes, with the thought that work would go forward on defining a texture mapping methodology & language extension for official part files.

This approach allows the committee to proceed with the official standards document on colors, utilizing the most widely supported mode (ie, color codes in the dithered range).

-- Steve 1) Or, as Andrew suggested, add all color codes to LDConfig.ldr and then restrict part authors to color codes defined in LDConfig.ldr.
