Anyone want to help a small open-source project?  The Catalyst[1] project is
looking for a logo.  Specifically, they're looking for a LEGO camel:

Here's the request on the list[2]:

The way I see it, there's three ways we can gain access to a winged lego
camel:

    * We get someone to build one out of actual lego's and we get a photo

    * We get someone to draw one, either by hand or via computer

    * We get someone to render one in 3d via open-gl or something

So, anyone up to the challenge?

LMK if you're interested!

Dan

For anybody wondering "Why a camel?", catalyst is written in Perl, and the Perl
books published by O'Reilly (which has a habit of putting animals on their book
covers) are adorned with a camel:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pperl3/chapter/ch18.html

Obviously the catalyst developers can't use the O'Reilly logo but it seems they
want to keep a link to O'Reilly's perl logo, hence the LEGO camel with wings
idea :)

Here’s my attempt.

Rendered in Open Source, and released in an open format too ;)

Cool :)  Could you post the DAT/POV files, so I could render it from a different
POV?

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

MPD is here. The POV files have lots of dependencies so aren’t easy to upload but if you find a preferable view you can send me the look_at, location and camera_angle information and I can do a render with the same setting with the new camera settings.

Sorry to reply to my own post. I sniffed around the thread at catalyst and changed the angle and altered the design (borrowing liberally from http://staff.science.uva.nl/~leo/lego/camel.html).

Actually, just post the various camels here, I'll just refer the Catalyst guys
to this thread :)

I am not interested, especially as the camel animal is associated with the CAML
programming language, both phonetically and as a logo, not with Perl.
Nevertheless here is a lego camel design of mine one can elaborate from and make
whatever usage he wishes:

Are they aware of the ABC's science show of the same name? Link:
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/ - I would imagine some Australians would be
confused with this show and their open source project.  It had me wondering
why the ABC would announce here that they're looking for a logo until I
checked your link.

They might want to check to see if there's any conflict of interest with the
names, I'd imagine the ABC's legal department might have issues with it, for
instance, if people in Australia got confused by the similarly named web
links appearing in a search.

I'm not sure how a web framework could be confused with a TV show...  But I'll
mention it anyway :)
