| The Mona Lisa uses a pointillist style that I first saw in Roy Cook’s Aayla Secura Pointillist Mosaic winner of best mosaic at Brickfest 2006. My method differs slightly from Roy’s. Unfortunately, I'm no programmer, but I think that it would be possible to perform the calculations you describe in a spreadsheet, if provided with the RGB values for each pixel in the image.
