A very cool vignette--poignant and effective, with an economy of bricks. I like
the tree, and I like the overall staging.
Forgive a dumb question, but I’m not really up on LEGO releases of late: are
those helmets and rifles official? And what is the stick-element used as a
grave marker?

No, they've never done any sort of modern military helmet, and there are currently only six recent detailed modern/future weapons (SW blaster, SW rifle, SW pistol, tommygun, short barrel semi-auto, and long-barrel semi-auto). No bolt-action (...) (16 years ago, 17-Aug-08, to lugnet.build.military, FTX)
