Pilots and service crews, gather around! We at Mechahub are pleased to announce
an exciting new contest. The theme for this contest is Civilian Mecha. The only
real restrictions are that the mecha possess no weaponry (i.e. not for military
application) and the limits of your imagination. There are no technology time
frame restraints either so it can range anywhere from Steampunk to Futuristic.
The contest will run from March 16th to May 25th.
There are several examples of unarmed mecha in popular science fiction and anime
like the exo-loader in the movie Aliens, construction patlabors in Patlabor, and
the logger mechs in Battletech. Some ideas to explore are salvage and retrieval,
warehouse/dock and spacedock workers, EMS/first responders, communications,
sports, and entertainment, tugs, product vendors, etc.
4 Categories are the following:
Land
Sea
Air
Space
The 3 sizes per category are:
Minifig scale with pilot, unmanned minifig scale (i.e. drone), and microscale.
You may enter only one moc per category so please do not rush to post. Please
only enter new creations. If you have made a civilian mecha that predates this
contest, and has not been posted before then it can be accepted. Placing the
mecha in a diorama to showcase its ability would greatly enhance its
presentation but is not required. A secret council of shadowy personnel will
declare the winners for each size and category.
Submit entries to the Mechahub Civilian Mecha Contest thread on
Lugnet.Build.Mecha with one picture link of the moc, directing to your gallery.
This contest has been posted on other AFOl forums/websites to give other people
a chance to enter. For easier compiling purposes for the judges, just pick one
forum to post your entries. Please do not multi-post your entries. For example,
DO NOT post your entry to both Flickr and Lugnet.
Steve Witt and the Lego Group have generously provided fantabulous prizes.
Now go forth to your fabrication units and churn baby churn!
P.S.
The Mechahub site is currently down due to hosting issues. We apologize for the
inconvenience and hope to rectify things soon.
We also reserve the right to modify the rules at any time if it suits the best
interests of the contest.

The contest deadline has been extended to 6/6/09. Extending the contest was not
a decision that was taken lightly. The pros and cons were weighed and in the
end, you cant satisfy everyone. It was felt that the community would benefit
with an extension. And no one wants the community to lose out, right? Also it
was stated originally that we reserved the rights to modify the rules.

This is an airborne hoist mecha used for hoisting objects and transporting them
around. On the back is a rocket engine for airborne operations, control and
flying. The pilot is situated on the front under the black windshield. At the
base are four pulley sets for hoisting operations.
All the parts for the mecha come from
Set 8129 [Peeron], excluding the
later added-on
flame and
smoke effects. Those came from other sets. But the mecha itself is all from
the one set. (And since the set did not belong to me I did not remove the
stickers).
The idea seed for this build came from the car engine and the windshield. The
car engine immediately reminded me of a jet engine. So I started thinking about
an air vehicle. And the windshield looked like the cover for a pilot seat. There
sizes lead to building at the micro scale level. Thus the starting point for the
mecha. Constraining the build to the set (#8149) which those parts came from
made it challenging and fun.

The Awesome Human Doing Big Robot
This robot does whatever a person can do. It can swim, walk, run, play games
(like kickball), and even pilot a plane. It is pretty big. Two people pilot it.
The pilots sit where its waist is. The arms shaped a little like fins. It looks
a lot like a person except it is bigger.
[Daddys Note: This is a family entry. For clarification the two pilot
seats are located among the two white cones or simply the 2x2 - 2x2 Bracket. I
was told the pilot legs would simple go around the cone. In a young persons mind
this works even though a mini-fig wouldnt fit (we dont own any sets with
mini-figs). As a proud dad I want to point out the smiley face on the robots
head :)]

SL-10
This is a space robot. (I see how you go back. You just push that button
[Points to backspace button]). He can walk on the moon. Do you know that
some people even golf on the moon? Im true. The long black arm turns and
collects samples. The L-shaped bracket with blue instrument and yellow tubes is
a binocular. It is like the thing that they went to up in space to fix [Hubble
telescope] but it is not as big as the one that is as big as a football field
(they havent put that one into space). The wires and blocks on the legs
control the ship. This is an autonomous space robot.
[Daddys Note: This is a family entry. The black Technic bricks on the
bottom are the moon surface while the plates on top are the robots feet.
Although this one has no smile, daddy has a wide smile on him :)]
