I got a request recently to say a few more things about LEGO windows.  I
have to admit, though, that I don't know too much about the newer 1990's
windows, and maybe someone else can take the baton for Part 4 -1990's
windows (Town Jr.), for some of the really tall 3 pane windows, etc.  I
just recently found out that Joshua Delahunty keeps up the Lugnet
Databases, (the proverbial keeper of the LEGO Ideology).  Joshua is
probably more than qualified to take a stab at a Part 4 than I am.

(See bottom of document for accessing LEGO Window & Door History Parts 1
& 2.)

But anyway, what really got me fired up for Part 3 was an EMAIL from a
good LEGO acquaintance from Memmingen Germany named Kurt Richter, who
had an unusual find in Germany.  That would be a 1x3x2 classic LEGO
window in BLUE!!  I never knew they existed in that color.  I thought
that the extent of the smaller blue LEGO windows were the 1x2x2 found in
recent sets (such as the Derby Trotter, and a few freestyle/basic
sets).  If anyone can solve this mystery for Kurt (and the rest of us!),
please let us know!

Blue windows were made in the 1x2x2 size, the 1x4x3 window size (with
blue frames), and also in the "skylight" window in a similar size, as
well as the taller 1x4x5 window  and the rare 1x6x5 blue windows (only
in space sets?).  But I never knew that they were ever made in blue in
any other classic window size.

For blue doors, LEGO never made blue classic doors, but did make the
1x3x4 medium (1970's) doors/doorframes in blue (but they were never sold
with the same door and doorframe colors in the same sets).  And then
there are the current doors, the 1x4x5 with a) the 4 window door, b) the
armor-guard and glass door, and c) maybe the all glass door (did they
make them in blue?).

On to a different color ....  recently I saw a 1981 German  LEGO catalog
with a DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn - the German National Railway) train car
with 1x2x2 grey windows.  This was the only time I ever saw the 1x2x2
grey windows in a set.  Were they only made for LEGO Trains?

And that leads me to a question about classic LEGO doors & windows.
Besides the 1x2x2 (which I have 2 of) and 1x1x2 (alas I only have 1 of
these), did they make any other classic window or door in black?  I saw
some black 1x4x2 windows and several black classic doors in a Swedish
LEGO advertisement (I believe in Tore Eriksson's website), but have
never been able to confirm if they truly existed in a set.  Anyone ever
recall seeing one?

I was recently asked "what would I consider the most valuable window
that LEGO ever made?"  Well I thought about some of the scarcer blue or
black or grey windows, but then I realized that you could never really
do a lot with a limited supply of these windows.  Ditto with the 1x6x5
windows, which they made in all the "off" colors (blue, yellow, black,
grey?).  Yeah they are real rare (especially in yellow), but not
everyone knows about these.

(IMHO) that leaves me with one window that was made back in 1982 (to the
best of my knowledge they were only made in that one set in that
color).... the Town House (6372) set with the very rare 1x4x5 windows
(dead common in any other color) in YELLOW!
(I would even pay $20 per window for these!)  Recently a Town House set
was bid up to $73.00, which was more than I wanted to pay for just 2
large yellow windows.

Someone else may have another candidate for most valuable window. (I'm
sure the train folks have a train window that can beat out this one!)
Some obscure classic window in black, blue or grey may be the true
rarest window, but if there's no demand for them (in the 90's) in that
color, then they aren't going to be the most valuable.

And that leaves another topic that I wanted to go over once more, namely
the classic LEGO windows "sill" versus "sill-less" windows.  (This was
discussed at length in an earlier thread.)    I have many examples of
the red 1x1x1 windows with and without "glass".   Unless due to rough
play, all the "glass-less" 1x1x1 windows were those without the
protruding window sills.   When the 1x1x1 windows went to the sill-less
style, LEGO eliminated the glass piece.  Of the 300 red "sill-less" ones
I have, none have a glass piece.

With the red 1x2x1 (short and fat classic window) I noticed that all 150
of my "sill-less" windows DID have the glass.  And with the red 1x1x2
(tall thin classic window - a favorite of a lot of people), I noticed
that of the 250 "sill-less" ones I have, about 150 had glass and 100
didn't.  So these "sill/sill-less" and "glass/no glass" windows have
even more variations than we anticipated, namely the 1x1x2 "no glass"
variety.

Well that's enough for now.

Please, if there is anything that may contradict me, or answers some of
these questions, please let us know!

Thank you,

(...) A question about windows: In the late 80s I bought Calssic Windows packs from S@H. The pack included 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 and 3x5 red windows (I think 2 of each). Do you recall the set numebr and piece count? (25 years ago, 30-Mar-99, to lugnet.build)
