Hey legohaulics! One of my cooler MOCs--my chess set. The pieces were
designed and built by me... and NO MINIFIGS! Theres so many minifig chess
sets out there--its getting very old. Heres a change. Brickshelf thread is--
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=134535
Note that the drawer does fit all 32 pieces inside.
Enjoy, and please post anything that pops into your head about this! (But dont
be too critical :D )

Not too critical - OK, Ill start with a minor criticisim that the pieces seem
to big for easy play with the board, but I havent played it so I wouldnt know
for sure.
Other than that, this is the nicest Lego chess set I have ever seen, and I think
Ill make a copy of it for my own use if you dont mind. I little things like
how the king piece, though wider than the board squares, is designed never to
interfere with another pieces. The Castle and Knight pieces are very, very well
done. And the pawns just rock - simple and exactly the right look!
Thanks for the inspiration, and please dont take my one criticisim too hard -
small is actually one of the other fine attributes of this set. Though I am
curious if it plays well or if pieces are bumped over very easily...

I like the chess set as well, but I share Matts concern. Onsolution would be to
magnatize the pieces and board. Id put a very small, but strong, magnet under
each tile http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D31&cat=10. And the
same or a slightly larger magnet in each peice
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D33&cat=13 or
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D34&cat=13. These should fit
inside the tubes just fine. And keep the peices centerd on a square.

Im very curious about these magnets. Have you tried them? How tight is the
fit into the tubes? Also, do the 2x2 tiles sit properly with the small magnets
underneath?
Im thinking about using these magnets for my copy of the Cathedral board game.

I picked up some samples of these after posting my message. These are a perfect
fit. The smaller magnet fits under tiles and plates with no problem, as its
just a bit shorter then a stud. And the diameter for these is a perfect fit for
the tubes. I placed a D33 in the tube of a new 2x4. And the fitis just tight
enough at the top of the tube that its not comeing out, ever. No glue needed!
Now I can make as many LEGO magnets as I want, in any avalible color.
Combined with the magnet under a tile, the brick adhered to the tile, even
upside down.

Just be sure to insert all your magnets the sane direction in you peices, and
the same for the tile.

There's also the potential of using Lego's magnets-- not the usual ones that fit
on a 2x2 modified plate, but the ones that Lego uses for their kitchen magnet
sets (like http://www.brickset.com/search.aspx?Set=851009-1). These have little
magnets that fit snugly inside the tubes, and are pretty strong! Not that you
could easily pry them out without ruining the magnet bricks, but an idea... (a
100% Lego solution!)
