Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Andrew Lipson
OK, this is the one I get the most email asking for, so Daniel and I finally got round to it: (URL) we cheated. And we feel really guilty about it. OK? I'll post some spoiler pictures and close-ups of the interesting bits shortly. LMKWYT (My (...) (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.announce.moc, lugnet.build, lugnet.castle) !!

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Dave Schuler
(...) Cheating or not, it's awesome! Even forgetting the crazy optical paradoxes for a moment, your design of the structure is really nice. I especially like the starburst things atop the towers, and the waterfall is very cool as well. But I LOVE (...) (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Tim Courtney
(...) WOW - this made my head hurt! Excellent work! I can't wait to see how you cheated :-) And I echo Dave, the clothesline is hilarious! :-D -Tim (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —David Koudys
(...) I really like this one (then again, I really liked all the others as well :) ) The little bits like the funky flowers made from white rocket engines, and the clothes line--very neat touches! Nicely done! Dave K (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Jeff Szklennik
(...) WOW! I don't see any 'cheating', so I'm interested to see what you're talking about. Wicked cool star things on top of the buildings- how did yo make those? Are the pants dry yet? (nice clothsline) ;) Jeff (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Andrew Lipson
(...) The tower decoration involved some creativity with roof pieces and 1x1 bricks with studs on the side. And a Bricklink order to get hold of a lot more 1x2 double/inverted slopes than I already had :-) (21 years ago, 3-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Thomas Avery
(...) details you put into it are really great (plants, clothesline, star-thingies, etc.). Very cool. -TJ (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Adrian Drake
(...) That's some fine looking work, there. I'm guessing the cheating is a matter of some nifty photoshopping work to add water and columns where they weren't before. You can tell that the tower on the left is in the foreground and the tower on the (...) (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Anne Carasik
Great work. I don't know how you do this without getting a headache :) Btw, what does LMKWYT stand for? -Anne (...) -- It might look like I'm doing (\`--/') _ _______ .-r-. nothing, but at the cellular >.~.\ `` ` `,`,`. ,'_'~`. level, I'm really (...)       (...) Please see Shiri Dori’s Acronym FAQ: (URL) will also help you with the other ones that you may encounter, and on top of that, many acronyms are just plain fun to read. With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen. (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Terry Prosper
I really had to search for the way you did it, because at first glance, it's perfect! But by following carefully the edges of the plates, I found the clue I was looking for. It's amazing how precise this thing is! Makes me envy you so much! Terry (...) (21 years ago, 1-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Andrew Lipson
(...) Yes, I was just a little careless with the camera positioning and it isn't quite right, so the bottom fake channel doesn't quite line up perfectly. Maybe I'll try to get a better version (if I can face the whole process of partially (...) (21 years ago, 3-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Brendan Powell Smith
Wonderful! Fabulous work, Andrew and Daniel. You continue to greatly impress and inspire. The overall images are always spot-on, and the little details like the clothesline bring a real warmth to the work. Out of curiosity, what will you do when (...)          Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Andrew Lipson
(...) Well there are still a few Eschers left ;-) I admit there aren't all that many more "impossible" ones that I have a good idea yet how to do, but I think we have a good chance of at least another one or two (Does anyone have a good idea how to (...)          Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —David Laswell
(...) It would certainly be tricky. The best I can think of would be to make the puddle surface with giant clear tiles, but I doubt they exist in the size you'd need. Another possibility would be to use an imaginary water surface created by (...) (21 years ago, 3-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Richard Finegold
(...) Whoa, it really looks like parts 3665 and 2357 on top of a 3660 at the far right of each bottom right to top left water channel! (21 years ago, 4-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Ross Crawford
(...) That's beautiful, Andrew. How about a mosaic of Metamorphose??? Regards ROSCO (21 years ago, 3-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Andrew Lipson
(...) I agree that Metamorphose would look spectacular, but I doubt I have anything like enough monochrome plates to build it at a scale that would do it justice :-( And there's quite a lot of hexagonal symmetry in this (and many other Escher (...)          Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —David Laswell
(...) While the tesselations look pretty cool on paper, it seems a bit too easy to transfer a flat image to a flat construction. The biggest challenge with the Escher collection is turning the physically impossible designs into physical creations. (...) (21 years ago, 3-May-03, to lugnet.build)

Re: Yet another Escher - "Waterfall" —Soren Roberts
