Hey Kevin, nice to hear from you!
Happy New Year.
After I published pictures of the Grelnix to Brickshelf, I went to your Inchworm
3 and 4 galleries then stared at the pictures trying to figure out how you made
them work!
More, on that later, thank you for looking at my creation.

I did!! Wow!!
Hardly a stud to be seen--thats inspiring on its own!
I love how you use obscure parts--the red tow truck hook from yor for the top of
the head--cute!
Nicely done!

Hi Dave!
I tried to maintain a smooth look through out the build. Using as many rounded
slopes as I could.
The obscure parts like the tow truck hitches were some of the first parts I
played around with to come up with the look.
Thanks for looking again!

Thanks for shareing Eric, Im happy you restarted building!
The Grelnix seems to me the perfect symbiosis of Rizmit (my alltime Fav up to
now) and the Beesh.
But there are some things which are much better as with those two:
- The proportions are much more in balance. Grelnix has a very human shape.
- The overall design is nearly studless. This is amazing at such a size.
Where did the parts come from? Did you start disassembling older models? I saw
a picture of your mom disasembling a mecha.
Again, a fantastic build.
Best wishes
Marco

Seasons Greetings Marco!

|
The Rizmit was always meant to be cartoony and it made use of those kinds of
proportions for its looks.
The Beeesh to me, was meant to look and be like a little gremlin.
The Grelnix was designed to fit somewhere in between. Aside from the Skrylitch,
I needed another mech that had more human proportions.
|
- The overall design is nearly studless. This is amazing at such a size.
|
It sort of just worked out like that.
Using long and rounded type slopes, along with some tile work to keep a nice
finished look.
|

|
I got a donation of the rounded slopes that came from Pick-a-Brick.
I also purchased some Pick-a-Brick from both online and at the Lego Store.
I used a $50 gift cert. for the online purchase.
I also brought some sets from Target, like a Ferrari set plus a few Exo-Force
and Bionicle sets for the ball joints I used in the inner shoulders, inner hips
and ankles.
I had four clear and black technic turntables, plus an all black one.
Then I ordered two more black and clear ones from Shop @ Home. Which reminds me,
I counted wrong when I wrote my post.
There are 8 technic turntables, and the knees use Robo Rider Gear Boxes, not
Throwbot Gear Boxes. (Correction)
|
I saw a picture of your mom disasembling a mecha.
|
Was Keith there?
Yes, the Red Quad was taken a part along with the old Zolqwith Speed Suit and
Mech Bay 11.
|
Again, a fantastic build.
|
Thank you!
I need to take a few more photos of the pilots and the rocket pack. Maybe a
couple close ups of the spine too.
Btw, the hips have a turntable on top of them. Then there is a Throw Bot Gear
Box on top of that for the spine bend. Then there is another turntable on top of
that for a total of two in the spine.
This turntable and throw bot gear box, then second turntable set up allows for a
third combined movement, sort of like tilting sideways action.
Thought I would mention it. Since it is hard to see and pretty much hidden.

Hi Eric,
Do you have pictures of the inside of the joints? Im curious about your
gearing techniques.

Hi Eric,

gearing techniques.
|
Hi Kevin!
I used a combination of techniques. I dont have many pictures of the joints per
se. They are mostly hidden and covered.
Although, these are much of the same techniques I have preached for years.
Ill describe some here now:
Shoulders - Hips
The shoulder and hip splay use a z40 and technic triangle plate (actually, that
you gave me when you visited, lol) and a pair of beams from the Bionicle
Bohroks.
Neck
The neck uses a series of double ended ball joints to provide articulation:
Although not a true geared set up, it is still rather nifty, because I added a
half dome/golf ball under the head and the twisting motion of the ball joints,
rides along the shape of the half dome. Guiding the neck articulation.
Ankles - Knees
Since this is such a large and heavy creation, I used the technique I developed
whereas, the worm gear box (in this case a Robo Rider Gear Box), drives a z8 to
z40. The beam is bound to the z40 via half axle pins.
The weight is transferred off the axle and on to the gear itself. Then the
mechanical reduction of the z40 attempting to turn against the z8 provides
additional strength and resistance.
As described and published here in the book we were part of:
LEGO Mindstorm Masterpieces: Building and Programming Advanced Robots By Miguel
Agullo
Inner hips - inner shoulders - elbows and ankles
....all use ball joints in multiples.
In this tiny picture you may notice the turntable is mounted to a set of ball
joints. This allows for rwd/rev motion/tilt.
In these additionally bad and hastilly taken pre completion cell phone pictures,
you may notice some shocks, levers and ball joints that flow between the points
of articulation. These provide additional stability and rigidity between the
joints.
Along with the related technic construction, these ae the core components that
led to the robots creation.
....plus monkey arms and 2 two inch hoses....from the Star Destroyer of course.
Eric
p.s. I will be adding a few more pics once I can get some decent sun light here
in the photography area...
:)

Wow! Thats a lot of Ball joints. Born on Christmas day...10 pounds 33
inches, splayed ankles and almost studless....(with two turntables and a
microphone). You should really consider a microphone next time, and one of
those squak-box things that Frampton always uses.
Great build E, and happy new year.

Hey Jon, thank you checking out the Grelnix.
As your collection grows, youll be making bigger and bigger mechs too!
About the Wraith, I checked online and I found a few different ones, so I am not
sure which one you mean.
Is it this one:
???

Thanks for the comments on the Pitbull, E!
The wraith I was referring to is this one.

as you can tell, this would be a bit more difficult to do justice to.

Thanks for sharing this MOC again, Eric.
Its always good to see the full range of poses a MOC can achieve. I find
this
pose particularly striking, although I wonder if it would look more dynamic
with the right arm up a bit higher (is above shoulder height a possibility?).
Cheers
