Hi all,

Many of those in LUGNET have wondered what was up with SciBrick...the organization had a few postings on its discussion board, there was a debut event in Houston, then...nothing.

Since Houston’s Challenger Center Gala, which happened in October, there has been some events that have happened that have directly affected SciBrick, of which the biggest was the stepping down of Felix Greco as SciBrick Communications Officer. Felix stepped down to take time and attention to his dissertation and further education, and will be missed here, as his work and dedication to SciBrick made it’s debut event very successful.

In his place, I have been appointed the new Communications Officer. Before that, I was Website Coordinator, and have been occupied getting that organized. So I am happy to announce that Scibrick’s website is now online here.

SciBrick’s mission hasn’t changed. In fact, it’s expanded. SciBrick will become the LEGO organization for Science Fiction and Fantasy, and will be in time, a group that will be able to provide its members and their creations a central point to plan displays in conventions, meetings, and other venues not previously conceived.

SciBrick will be involved in upcoming conventions, including both Brickfests next year and members are thinking of contests and other ways of getting people involved with Science Fiction and Fantasy displays.

Some other ideas that are being looked at are:

• theme-based kits under the SciBrick name, like PCS ships. • movie tie-in displays • Displays in museums • Member materials (shirts, etc.)

There will be a lot to do and plan, so SciBrick is also now looking for new members to join. You can go to the SciBrick site and see the membership requirements in the FAQ page and also the current roster of members.

I, as Communications Officer, will always be open to suggestions and comments from the community. Drop a line to my e-mail address above, and I will answer as soon as possible.

So SciBrick is here! Many thanks to the members and those who have helped me out!

Joe Meno SciBrick Communications Officer .space paparazzi!

Well, nobody under 18 is allowed so I guess I'll be able to contribute
nothing...

Oh well.

Read farther. There is an exception clause.

The age limitation was placed to minimize SciBrick's liability, as the group
simply cannot be held responsible for the care of a minor during a display or
event.

Hi Joe and all SciBrick members,
This sounds great - I've been following SciBrick for a while, vicariously,
enviously reading about the bash in Texas... sounds like you've got it going on.
Since my own personal interest follows space exploration and tech-stuff, I hope
to eventually join the organization, after actually building and displaying
something space-related. Note to self: finish Galactica in time for BrickFest
PDX...

BTW, do you mind if I link scibrick.org from the BrickFest PDX web site?

Hi Joe,

Things look pretty good. One thing I notice is that there is only sporadic reference to fantasy. A few places you mention SF&F, but elsewhere the site only makes references to SF. For instance:

“Q: What kinds of creations are eligible for display at a SciBrick event?

A: SciBrick is specifically a science fiction LEGO¨ model oriented organization. That includes spacecraft, aliens, mecha, Moonbase Modules, and other creations that are recognizable as science fiction models. All scales and styles are welcome, but other genres and non-LEGO¨ models are best suited for other venues.”

Also your main sections on the front page are Space, Mecha, and Moonbase. Where’s a poor Tolkien MOC’er to go to find the Fantasy section? Or is “Fantasy” being defined in such a way as to exclude the more Sword and Sorcery regions of Fantasy?

Are you implying that SciBrick is biased???

Well, you’re right, in a manner of speaking. While SciBrick was being formed, there was a pretty spirited discussion about the inclusion of fantasy, with the outcome being that fantasy would be something that SciBrick would eventually ‘get to.’

That’s a position that did not sit well with me, so I chose to open up the field to fantasy immediately upon my appointment as Communications Officer. My view is that SciBrick can only benefit from a diversity of genres (Although I’d rather not have Frank Frazetta art done in LEGO:), so the more the merrier. Also, what could be cooler than to have a LOTR display at a theater? My local club is planning to do that, and I’d like other builders to have such an opportunity.

As for the categories on SciBrick, that page was set up based on the previous ‘non-fantasy’ platform. That’s something that I’ll have to revise, and I will do that hopefully this weekend, assuming I have nothing surprising happen to me:)

Thanks for catching that. The FAQ will have to be looked at also to reflect the change in emphasis.

So when do you want to join:)?

Joe

Very cool. Be sure to take lots of pictures and post them somewhere. I’ll add a link to my page of LotR MOC links.

Unfortunately it is rare that I have a chance to even get to my local LUG, much less take part in public displays, so I don’t think I could be a contributing member. I’ll just stay here and cheer on the sidelines.

Cool!

Since my previous post requesting interest in OurCon, I had been sharing the URL of Scibrick with the Con organizers, but at that time it was only a front page. Nice to see there is more now.

Naturally, I must ask the same question as a few others: How do I become an official member? I believe I fulfill the requirement of having met someone in the core group. :)

Another question is how does one go about suggesting an event itself? Was something like my prior post about OurCon (and a possible Moonbase or MOC display therein) sufficient? Should I email the comms officer instead?

Anyhoo, nice to see things progressing. Sorry I’ve been offline so much since BrickFest. Non-Lego® issues and all... I’m about to post more regarding OurCon for those interested...

Space!
