OH MY GAWD!
Santa was kind enough to leave me a small assortment of 2002 LEGO sets this
Christmas (read: I found 'em...I bought 'em...wife can complain all she
wants!). I have 4790, 4791, 4792, 4582 and 4585 gracing my desk now.
I just have to say that the minifig head in 4582 Racers Red Bullet is the
absolute *BEST* minifig head ever made! The expression is
classic...surpassing even the original Alpha Team Flex expression (the
re-vamped Flex just doesn't quite cut it for me). It's darn near
anime-style. Check it out if you've yet to see it (sorry for the quality, my
scanner doesn't like 3D objects):

Other things of note in these sets:
+ The brick red female flip-style hair in 4792 (perfect for Dana Scully, but
slated for a sig-fig of my wife Jill)
+ The "super-evil" skeleton head from 4790
+ The red helmet with flame graphic from 4582
+ The indigo blue arms, torsos, hips and legs in the Alpha Team sets (real
blue jeans...whoo-hoo!)
+ Almost complete integration of Technic pin/hole assembly methods in all sets
+ New SNOT-ready pieces (i.e. 1X4 brick, modified, with four hollow
forward-facing studs, 8X6 brick, boxed, modified, with 7 Technic holes on
the long sides, and 3 on the short)
+ Click-hinge style flexi-arms
+ New swoopy canopy elements and fairing bricks
+ Alpha Team 2002...the whole series...a mecha builders heaven
Dissapointments:
- Many multiple poops, from the small Racers bodies, to the fin on the back
of the 4792, to the base/work-platform in 4790
- Attaching clip-on style elements to the new brush guard type
piece...things just don't stay connected (fins in 4791, lights in
4792)...this is the worst, most fragile type of assembly I've ever
encountered in a LEGO designed set, though it would be perfectly acceptable
for most MOCs
Greatest Surprise:
The 4585 Racers Nitro Pulverizer...a veritable parts heaven, plus fun and
well designed to boot. At 17¢ per element, not a great buy, but its got the
best pull back motor I've ever played with, pnumatic tires, light-blue wedge
elemements, the surly minifig head (one of my favorites...not AT Crunch, but
the Race one), and is one of two 2002 Racers sets with full minifigs. It's
so good, I'm on the lookout for the 4584 Hot Scorcher now.
