Gail,
The Vancouver LEGO Club is currently doing a display/show at the
Surrey Museum. Its on display June 3 - Aug. 19, 2006. We had a week
beforehand to set up, and 3 days after to tear down.
Items we provided:
- Artifacts related to the history and development of Lego (two display cases)
- A working LEGO train display (six tables in rectangle shape)
- A life size LEGO living room (sofa, coffee table, lamp)
- MOCs My Own Creations by Club members (two tables of creations)
- A work in progress of the Surrey Beaver, City logo created by Club members on Saturdays throughout the exhibition
- A childrens interactive play station with LEGO and Duplo
- Designated Club members to volunteer in train area and work in progress area, each Saturday throughout the exhibition period
- Eight to ten tables with table cloths and skirting
We also built a great ball contraption (GBC).
Items the musem provided:
- Two lockable display cases for history of LEGO display
- Stanchions for train display, living room and MOCs display tables
- Plinths, display stands and mounts for history of LEGO display cases
- Exhibition title for the gallery
- Gallery security cameras and staff surveillance monitoring, throughout exhibition period
- Alarmed, monitored and secure facility
- Exhibition promotion including: exhibition poster, PSA to all media, Surrey Leader newspaper editorial article, and summer Leisure Guide exhibition copy
- Installation support and de-installation support by the Museums Exhibition Preparator
- Chairs for Club members during installation, de-installation and Saturday hosting, throughout the duration of the exhibition
Our display is open to the public whenever the museum is open (Tues-Sat). The
only electronics we have running include 1 9v motor on the GBC, and 2 train
motors on the train display. Theyve been running all day, 4 days a week, so
far with no problems (ok the GBC gets jammed up sometimes, or balls go astray,
but thats not motor-related), and I assume theyre powered down/unplugged at
the end of each day.
Weve been given a fee to help cover our expenses, such as transporation costs,
materials, worn out motors, etc. Half of this amount was paid upon successful
completion of setup, and the remainder will be paid after we tear down.
I believe we are in the process of installing buttons (like Ben suggested) to
control the GBC as well as the train to help prolong motor life.
Hope that helps!
-Bryan

| I'm looking to pick the brains of clubs who have done longer duration shows, especially at a museum. NovaLUG (Nova Scotia, Canada) has been approached by a museum, but the longest show we have done before was one day setup and two day display. In (...)
