question:
are the train tracks of old (late 80's early 90's) the same size as
current tracks?

Old train tracks are the same lenght but for the rest very different. One
stretch of 12V track is build from two rails and three sleepers (2x8 plates
with special 'connectors' for the track) and a conducting center piece .
Actually the blue 12V track had two regular 2x8 plates to create a track
piece. In curves there are seperate pieces for the inside and outside curved
rails.

do the tracks fit together?

No, the 9V track has conducting rails while the 12V track has a seperate
piece in the middle. I think it is possible to put the conducting 12V piece
in the middle of 9V track but then you would be unable to use switches and
crossings.

to the cars fit on the tracks?

The width is the same, 12V wheelsets fit perfectly on 9V track and vice
versa.
You could lineup the both track types and the wheelsets have no problem
switching the track type but you would have to use another way to power the
motor (like the 4.5V trains, they carry their power with them and makes them
independant of track type).

(...) The curved 12v power tracks that fit in the middle of the rails will not fit on the 9v rails without a little filing. The extra sleepers on the 9v rails cause problems with some plastic bits on the bottom of the 12v 3rd rail. Also, because the (...) (24 years ago, 3-Feb-01, to lugnet.trains)
