The trains are motorised. The first trains carried battery packs, but the
12V and 9V pick up current via the track (12V had a seperate electric
element on the track while in 9V the track itself passes the current).
Lights get their electricity from that track too (it is passed via the
motor) and uses the standard 9V lighting elements and 9V connection wires as
used in some Technic sets.

Some older trains and DUPLO trains carry their own power but the 9V train
line all get their power from the track.

Yup, that's all you need to get a train running. The oval track that comes
with the train is a bit small so you might want to get some extra track.
