drag of US engines than anything else.  If the air flows smoothly along the top

Yes, I think you're right about that! Turbulent flow would be much more
likely to disperse the smoke by the time it got back to the cab than
laminar flow would.

I wonder if streamlined engines (none of which have these ears) were
more prone to smoky cabs? They all had fairings for show which no doubt
also contributed to laminar airflow
