Do you mind if I copy a few ideas? :D

There are a number of modes of operation triggered from the remote control.

1 - Select 1,2 or 3 and it picks up the crate from spot 1,2 or 3.
Select 1,2 or 3 again at it puts it down at spot 1,2 or 3.
It will not allow you to tripple stack or pick up if a spot has no crate.

2 - Select 1,2 or 3 and it picks up the crate from that spot 1,2 or 3
and automatically decides where to put it (random).

3 - It picks a crate and moves it to another spot. It keeps doing this until
all the crates are back in position 1 2 and 3.
I added quite a bit of AI, so it won't pick the same crate for movement
each time, and it won't double stack on the middle position.
If you keep an eye on the different colours of the crates it moves them
    all around quite well.

I'm not precious about any of this, it's lego afterall. Any ideas you want to
use then go for it. That's why I took some pictures, I was hoping others would
like some ideas and make them there own.

The idea of using thread to move the grabber along the boom was my uncle's. I
would have used some bricks with teeth all along the boom. His idea was simple
but worked well.

Same with the position detection. He put one touch sensor which gets triggered
at different spot on the boom.  Again very simply but it stops at the same place
everytime.

My uncle's version are in other brickshelf folders (go up a few levels) or
visit my website.  It's interesting to see how it developed over 6 weeks with
the first 3 version created by someone with no lego building experience.

My involvement was to streamline the design a little and write the RCX code.
