Tim, After looking at the real thing it apears to me that the orange wing in
the front is not wider than the body of the train. Instead the cab narrows
and thats why is gives the impression of beeing wider. It looks like the
wing blends into the body. Of course, much more work in Lego...

I think from this photo and
this photo that you are right, or
almost right. The wings may extend out half a brick (making a seven-wide nose).
Hmmm. Makes the nose design more interesting... I might give it a go to fix it.
