Even though I am a committed 8 wider, I love this new container car (and the
BNSF which preceded it).
This set (and the newer BNSF) actually creates in me a dilemma. On the one
hand, I want to show off my building prowess by constructing 8 wide trains to
show model railroaders how detailed LEGO trains can be, but on the other I want
to encourage parents to purchase LEGO for their kids because it simply is the
best toy in the world. By telling parents that my cars arent available as
sets, I feel I have instantly turned them off as potential first-time buyers.
Entry into LEGO trains market seems too complicated and expensive.
But because the 10170 and the BNSF are so cool, I could definitely see running a
pair of BNSFs and about 10-15 10170s on our layout. And I could see running the
Santa Fe and a string of the passenger cars on a second line as well. And then
when Im asked about the trains on our layout, I could simply say, your child
could be running that set in your house tonite!
Of course, I think Id impress model railroaders more with my designs than
with TLGs, and therein lies the rub. But I had never even considered the stock
LEGO train sets worthy of display until now-- which is about the highest
compliment I can come up with, I guess.
And if TLG comes out with 9 volt Thomas characters, I would run them out of
the box, and perhaps that would be the best of both worlds for an 8 wider like
me.
Kudos to Jake and TLG for this latest offering.
