Redesigned mini train wheel (!)

This seems to have slipped by under the radar, but the mini train wheel has been
redesigned and improved by LEGO. The old one [1], available in M.O.W. cars,
Gringott's Bank, etc., was high friction, and tended to be very squeaky. The new
one [2], available in the Spiderman Train Rescue set [3], has a redesigned axle
hole which is low friction. Consequently, it rolls more freely, and squeaks
less. There's four in the set.

The easy way to tell them apart is that the old style has a round axle hole, and
the new style has an X-shaped axle hole (which is too small for a Technic axle).
If you have really good eyesight, the old style is printed with the number 2927,
and the new style has the number 50254.

(...) I hadn't noticed that, but COOL. That's a very nice set to begin with and this is the icing on top. Hmm, now you've given me an idea about a coal mine for a medieval layout. Thanks LEGO! (...) Oddly enough when I noticed it my excitement turned into disappointment. From what I could tell on the box art in the store, I thought it was actually an axle hole, and I had a mini-celebration for a minute there. Then when I got home and (...) (20 years ago, 16-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains)

(...) The other, and likely reason that the axel hole was redesigned, is to be consistant with the new mini axel car wheels. These were redesigned to lock onto the axel for bull back and electrified racer motors. Unfortunatly all of these moter use (...) (20 years ago, 16-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains)

(...) Sweet! Now I have an excuse to pick up some 4855s on discount. I have some badly squeaking wheels on my MOWs that cause much cringing at train shows. Thanks for the tip, Rick. Ed (20 years ago, 21-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains)

(...) Thanks for the info. I've a problem with my London Underground train which uses these wheels and the high friction at a recent show sapped loads of power. We could only run the one motor on one track due to this and it mkes a hell of a (...) (20 years ago, 25-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains)
