Mayby not as challenging as the topic title says, but at least I got your
attention ;-)
I like the way the lego trains were build in the blue track era, but I make no
problem with using new parts as well. Having built 4 and 8 wheeled
diesellocomotives and 4 wheeled steam locomotives, I wanted to build a 8 wheeled
steam locomotive using the old large 12 V train motor. I bought another motor
about a month ago, and I needed to build a locomotive around it, so this was
another reason to build this locomotive. Due to a lack of black bricks (without
having to steal those from sets and mocs) I used red for the drivers cab. As I
also had a pack of the old driving rods, I wanted to use these as well. I
havent yet seen any 8 wheeled locomotive with the old train motor and those
driving gears, so I had to try this out if it could work. I had to place the
cylinders higher to prevent blocking the front wheels going through curves.
As I dont have a digital camera, I created a picture using LDraw and Povray:
