Hi All,
I just wanted to send out a thought about fests, events, and parties. I have
attended 3 BrickFests, 2 BricksWests, 1 LEGO World, 2 PNLTC "all-hands" parties,
and several meetings that included AFOLs from around the world... (please don't
read this as bragging!) and what all of them had in common was people! People
that loved playing with LEGO, regardless of theme, style, or skill level!

There is a magic about LEGO that we all know in our hearts and minds. It
manifests itself in a unique way for each of us, but a big part of the magic is
sharing with others. And this is evident with the success and growth of the
various festivals that now happen around the globe! But I wanted to share this
thought with every one, and it is:

It doesn’t have to be a huge multi-hundred person get together to be a blast.

Jon Rasmussen , one of the PNLTC members organized an “all-hands” party located
in the middle of  nowhere halfway between Portland and Seattle, three years ago.
There where about 25 people in attendance and many had never met before because
PNLTC had grown so large and the cross pollination was limited.  We had a great
time! It was held in a public meeting room at a library. We ate lunch together
on site, shared building techniques via a show and tell style period (like a
loose session), traded parts, did a draft, and this is where the Dirty Brickster
was born (and aptly re-named from the classic “white elephant gift exchange”)!

The whole point of this is to remind everyone that this hobby is about having
fun and relationships with others. Sometimes a club can get trapped in that
“business” of doing shows. And this leads to every time a club has a meeting it
is all business and no fun. So have some fun! Have a club party (no club
business allowed!) or… invite a neighboring club (from the next city) to come
out for a nano fest and treat them like the guests they are!

The former PNLTC (now the PSLTC – Puget Sound LEGO Train Club and GPLR - Greater
Portland LEGO Railroaders) are still having these parties, the next one is
Saturday January 15th 2005 in Seattle! If anyone wants to drop by please do; be
our guests!!! And a great big thanks to Jon Rasmussen for organizing our third
party!

So in the immortal words of Bill and Ted, “Party On Dudes!” and have a happy
holiday!

SteveB
