Hi all!

A friend and I were talking about pantographs the other day, and we have a
question which you might be able to answer...

The old style, with 2 sides, is common.
/\
\/
As well are "sleighs" and round pantographs for trams.

The new one are "single" 1-sided pantographs
/ or \
\     /
Looking at an electric engine, they usually have 2, and the it turns the
"wrong" way. As above, the first one is forward (right). I guess would be,
that it by that way would be pressed against the wire and give a better
connection. EMUs, such as ICE use the same system.
Then again, looking at trams, it turns the other way around. I thing to note
here is that trams usually do not drive as fast as regular trains,
especially not as fast as ICE.
Looking at local commuter EMUs, they might have one pantograph only of this
type, which it uses for both directions.
Does anyone know much about this?
What is the advantage of such new pantographs except they are lighter?

We were also talking about the spikes it gives, how that affects the wire.
Looking at the local trolleybusses here, it should damage the wire a lot
more than it does, spikes are quite common.
I know when thinks like that happens at work, there is clealy damage to the
cable and we replace it.

What is the typical diameter of a wire?

Finally, how much does an engine leak? Parked engines always have the
pantographs down. This makes sence, but how much do they actually leak?

TIA
Sonnich

Fraid I can't answer most of your questions but: In the UK nearly all electric locos and multiple units now have the single arm type pantograph. They all have only one so the direction the pantograph faces does not seeem to matter, They run upto (...) (21 years ago, 20-Nov-03, to lugnet.trains)
