automated level crossing question?

Greetings,

I was hoping to pick the brains of those of you who have had automated level
crossings in your train layouts.  I'm trying to figure out how far in front of
the level crossing the first sensor should be (that tells things to lower the
gates).  I realise that it depends on the speed of the train, and the track
geometry (straight or curved).  I'm just looking for a rough estimate of the
distance others have used.  For reference, it takes 2 seconds for my gates to
lower.

I'd like to have it working for our show this weekend, and I'm running a little
short on time to set it up and experiment myself.
