Hello, Josh,
Regarding my Amtrak Cascades train:
"Was it complicated?".....
That's quite an interesting question! The answer is, "yes."
How did I build it?
1) At least one year of thinking about it; and I'm still back-burner
tinkering with it....
2) Probably at least 5 versions of an attempt to build a shared mono-axle
spring-loaded close-coupler.
a) several construction failures
b) modifications to achieve greater angles of rotation between adjacent cars
c) many attempts to build it so it was half-way easy to assemble the
complete train set on-track...still working on that!
3) First, a test-bed train to demonstrate the proof of principle; didn't
look anything like the Cascades!
4) A fair bit of purchases on BrickBay...just to build a red/white version.
5) Finally, enough green available (love that green Star Wars speeder set!)
to build per Cascades colors.
What color scheme do you like to build for yours?
The only assistance I really have time to offer are the photos currently
available via my BrickShelf gallery. I tried to detail the coupler
construction with a series of photos. I gather you've seen these? I hope
that is enough to get you started and then finish with your own concepts.
Best of building to you, Josh! Sorry I don't have time to break the
Cascades set down for you further right now.
later,
James Mathis

| (...) I am so glad to hear this! I often see amazing MOCs that people have made and wonder if I'll ever be able to produce such quality work. It's frustrating to see something amazingly complex and beautiful and hear, "yeah, I whipped this together (...) (23 years ago, 15-May-01, to lugnet.trains)
