(...) Eggliners are a good joke... But to me, they do NOT capture the essence of a train car. There is a place you have to know where to stop compressing and they went TOO far. That is why in my ATSF project, I made the cars LONGER than Lego chose (...) (20 years ago, 30-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

(...) Agreed. Part of the skill (and fun) in building anything real in Lego is to leave in what is essential to the character and leave out what you can get away with to ensure functionality.
