This is the first time I have written a review of a new LEGO set but I am very
impressed by the new fire station http://guide.lugnet.com/set/7945. That also
may explain why it is on back order already at www.LEGO.com.

I purchased one of the new fire sets over the weekend. This is the new #7945 set
that contains 600 pieces.  When I looked at the set in the store I knew it was a
nice set but building the set reveals a lot of surprises. The set contains two
sets of the rolling garage doors that fit into the part #4216, Brick, Modified 1
x 2 with Groove.  There is more than the required number of the 4216(s) (29 red
and 18 white) in the set.  For some reason instead of using normal 1x2 bricks,
LEGO just included the grooved ones. You will end up with twice as many as
needed for the set and can swap out the excess for use in other projects.

The fire truck contains a new version of the extension arm. The extension arm
uses a Technic Axle Joiner Perpendicular with Extension (53586) that is also
used as a leg brace in one of the new BIONICLE® sets. You can see this silver
colored part on the side of the trucks lift arm. There is also a Plate 2 x 8
with Door Rail (30586) that allows two of the 'Window 1 x 4 x 6 Frame with Three
Panes' (57894) to move side by side like sliding doors.

The three sections are modular and joined by connector pins to form a single
building.  This set is well worth the money.

There were a few negatives including the fact that the ladder truck sticks out a
little beyond the firehouse.  LEGO used a couple of the new panels on both the
fire chief’s car and the ladder truck that have the large connectors and look a
little juvenile.  The truck is six wide with one seat inside and the fire
chief’s car is four wide. Some of the newer sets were being made wider as well
as the road plates.

I am looking forward to seeing more of new town sets being released this year
including the release of the Cargo ship (set #4030). The photos from the French
Toy Fair showed the new cargo ship partially built, but it appeared wider than
the first version.
