I agonized for quite a long time on how to attach the horizontal pieces. At
one point, I was designing an all-technic frame around which I was going to
wrap all the bricks.
Finally, I realized that I didn't need all that complexity (and needless
waste of technic beams that will undoubtedly be needed on other buildings).
Instead, each set of horizontal arches is attached with 2 1x1x1 technic
pieces. This is a standard 1x1x1 brick with an axle hole through the
middle. These are available in both gray and black in such technic sets as
the space shuttle and the silver champion. I used both gray and black
because I didn't have quite enough gray. Luckily, the connector pieces are
hidden beneath other bricks, so you can't tell. I couldn't use the
conventional pieces with a stud on the side because the stud stuck into
other structural elements (that were needed to hold up each floor).
The 4.5V railroad tracks used as molding on the side are attached with the
more conventional 1x1x1 modified bricks with a stud on the side.
Speaking of non-LEGO pieces, I got a ton of pieces from a friend's kid (one
just entering his dark ages - Mhhahahahah) a while back. Another local LEGO
lover, Brian Stokes was browsing through my LEGO collection a few weeks ago
(looking for some trade pieces) and had the audacity to call me a heretic
because he found some non-LEGO pieces in my collection! I had never
realized that these were non-LEGO and had actually used these (I hate to
mention this, but the all-famous LEGO City 2 Police Station had some filler
pieces that were accidentally non-LEGO!). Since identified, I have
respectfully destroyed this infestation, but some of these pieces are quite
good stand-ins. I think I might still have a few non-LEGO pieces lurking in
my unsorted collection.
