Slizer & Throwbot: Why the 2 names?

Yeah, I know I'm talking about a dead product line that many wish never
existed (who knows if we'll be saying that about Bionicle years from now)...
but I'm interested in marketing, so humor me if you wish.  We know that the
LEGO company's first attempt at an action figure line was Slizer/Throwbot...
And that they were called Throwbots in North/South America and Slizer
everywhere else.

Here's my question... does anyone really know WHY the naming and storyline
distinction was even made in the first place?  Seems like an awfully weird
occurrence.  Do you have any speculation, hard facts, or official LEGO
reasoning on the matter?

Thanks for your time.
