The "Adjustable Stick" is the long straight "arm" that is connected to the
end of the bucket, or dipper.
Anyway, the stick can be moved "in-and-out" along its length. The cables
that Beat is talking about on his website will move the stick in and out,
thus moving the bucket in and out.
What this accomplishes during digging operations is to push the bucket into
the soil. If you didn't push the bucket out, it would skip along the ground
as you raised it up with the bucket cables.
The stripping shovel starts by placing the bucket at the base of a hill or
mountain side and then raises up the bucket with the cables attahced to the
pulleys on the bucket. At the same time the bucket is raised, the dipper
stick is pushed out therefore forcing the bucket teeth to dig into the soil.
An analogy would be comparing a stripping shovel to digging a hole yourself
with a shovel. You put the spade end on the ground, then push the spade in
with your foot, and finally raise it up by the handle. The part where you
push it in with your foot is just like the stripping shovel pushing the
bucket in by extending the stick when it, well, uh... strips!
These machines were intended to dig through quite a bit of soil and are
quite powerful. I read about one stripping shovel having a "stick" that was
made of a steel tube 7 feet in diameter with 3 inch walls.
