replacement construction for 'obsolete' narrow steering rack

It appears that the 1x6 plate with round ends with holes,
as used to hold sterring gear together since the early
80s, is no longer made - at least the fee current sets
that use standard (new) steering gear don't include it.
(See
"plate with toothing, 6x1" on
http://w3.one.net/~hughesj/technica/registry/r_plate.html
)

The new plate/rack combination exists in an 8-wide
variety, as used in the MT dragster, but there is none
for the narrowest possible setup using the current sterring
knuckles, which is 6 studs wide.
While not an exact replacement to recreate old sets
from instructions, the following works for new constructions:
Take a 4-axle, place a worm gear in the center, cap
ends with #1 (i.e. single-ended) angle connectors.
If used with a 1/2-bush spacer over the steering knuckle,
an 8-gear will mesh easily from either above or below.
The rotational position of the worm gear will affect
whether the gear 'looses' this short rack at the end;
even in the 'best' position, two gears or a slight
restriction of steering travel may still be necessary.
The position of the gear along the axle makes a difference,
too; if the gear is placed below the worm (and thus against
the beams that hold the sterring knuckle 'arms'), that
positioning is more limited and makes proper functioning
more difficult. Despite a slight need to 'tune' this setup,
it basically solves the problem of the missing plate, which
I was facing in building a 10-wide car, using the small
'race' tires (bungee dragster rear wheels etc.) for the
first time.
Other solutions coming to mind right now:
2 6-long halfbeams with 1/2-pegs, and a normal 1x4 rack
(too tall)
1 6-long halfbeam, a 2x4 plate with a normal 1x4 rack
pointing either up or down - this may be the best, actually.
Back to the lab...
