This subject was thrashed fairly thoroughly a number of months ago, and I
remember that the conclusion is no, not if the engine and transmission is • left
assembled as instructed. Now that the news search function is reestablished,
you have a chance to find those previous messages. Now, what I did was empty
out the interior and install a five speed transmission like the 8448 but this
meant that the steering link fore and aft had to be lowered to go around the
wider transmission and I'm pretty sure that all counts as cheating for what • you
want to do. However, it does leave a space behind the seats to install a • motor
analogously to where the 8448 mounts a motor relative to the transmission, so
it's the same setup and the chassis moves as expected.

Thanks for the information. It seemed that many of the old topics said that
the drive train is too complex and therefore creates a lot of friction and
that the transmission system is somewhat reversed, which further increases
the dificulty of motorization. I tried to attach two gear-reduction motors
slightly under the engine (engine had to be raised a bit to allow them to
fit), so that they wouldn't have to use the chain (which can sometimes
create a bit of friction) and it seemed to work quite well when the car was
raised off the ground, but the vehicle wouldn't move at all. I need to try
some more stuff with this...

This deserves a more complete response. So I have returned home, attached a
battery box, and started pressing buttons and shifting gears.

Let me say that this "5-speed 8880" is built entirely from spare parts with the
exception of the four locking hubs. I am not yet ready to pay US$200 for a set
of them (packaged with the rest of the 8880). I am probably not alone in
wishing this part was available in some other set. Otherwise, there are hubs
and tires from two Red Furys, steering arms from four Air Enforcers, suspension
arms from two Super Street Sensations, shocks from four CyberSlam sets, and so
forth. My comments below are with no "engine" installed–strictly motor,
transmission, and drivetrain. Interestingly, a differential fits very neatly
under the center of the 8448 transmission if you replace the 2 connector with
an axle and have the small end of the differential meshing with the 16 tooth
gear along that axle.

With the car lifted from the ground, and using only one motor, the wheels will
turn under power in all five gears and reverse but there is the friction you
mentioned and it seems to run fastest in first gear. That is, I do not achieve
the display of different gear ratios that one does with the 8448. With the car
on smooth ground, it will move in first gear. I can get it going faster if I
put in reverse and have the motor turn the other way, this must be the "motor
turns faster in one direction than the other" principle discussed recently.
