Lego Weight Elements -- Anyone use them?

Has anyone found the Lego weight elements usefull?  They're sold at the
Pitsco-Dacta site.

(...) I have a few which came with the 8862 and 8868 models. They seem to be useful as counterweights on cranes. Usually what happens without the weights is that one side of the crane is much heavier than the other and therefore the turntable starts (...) (23 years ago, 4-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)
