I just bought this set too. It is very cool. However, I didn't buy it for it's own sake, I
wanted the ball joint and the steering parts(as you mention). I liked the fact that mine
came with four rubber bands and the model only uses two.
I took one look at the alternate model and thought that it wasn't worth my time. I was
surprised by how long the main model remained built before I want to use the parts.
Looking forward to getting my hands on the SW Technic sets. Keep it up Lego.
