Greetings Gaz,

9 pin. You want a 9-pin male to plug into the back of the control lab and a 9
pin female to plug into a COM port on the back of your PC. I recommend buying
new. I spent 3 hours trying to get Control lab to work only to find out the the
two used serial cables I had were bad. I have also heard that you can put a USB
adapter onto the serial cable to plug it into a USB port but I have not tried
this.

Buy Robolab, it is the school version of the software to program the RCX. It
also can control Control lab. If you haven't programmed in Robolab I recommend
doing the tutorial which I think comes with it. I would do this tutorial as well
(5mb pdf file):

Don't bother doing the pilot level programming bits.
This website from Tuffs talks specifically about Control Lab:

Programming Control lab is the same as programming the RCX except you start with
a "Begin Control Lab Interface" Icon. Before you can run your Control Lab
program remember that you will need to "SET COM PORT" to the com port that you
have hooked up control lab. Do not use "Autodetect". It does take a while to get
used to programming in Robolab, feel free to ask questions.
You can see my big Control Lab project, "the Automated Backhoe" at:
