I do not know what austin was pointing to, but the old cylinders had a "2x2
brick" stuck on its end and can therefor be attached to normal bricks. The
new cylinders is in the "studless-style" and has this "brick" in the bottom
removed.
There are still the tubes for connection it with axel or technic pins.
